AutoCAD Map 3D Basics

AutoCAD Map 3D Basics is a two-level training series designed to help CAD and infrastructure professionals bridge the gap between GIS data and design workflows. This course introduces you to the AutoCAD Map 3D environment and its integration with AutoCAD Civil 3D, teaching you how to import and manage GIS data, work with georeferenced imagery, and link drawing objects to external databases. Building on that foundation, the series progresses into creating styled maps, feature labeling, thematic mapping, and managing object data for real-world accuracy. By the end of the series, you’ll have the skills to transform raw GIS data into intelligent, data-rich drawings that support better planning, analysis, and infrastructure design decisions.

This live online series offers 2 four-hour courses. You can take both courses or just the one that meets your needs. Each separate course is delivered in 2 two-hour sessions. A live instructor explains the detailed functions and addresses questions as the class progresses.

Note: Instructor will present using Autodesk Map 3D 2026. Students who wish to follow along with instructor are encouraged to use the same version.

Recording: Registrants for a course will receive access to a recording of each session for 7 consecutive days. Access will start the next business day after the session ends.

For years, infrastructure design and GIS data were treated as separate worlds requiring different software. Autodesk Map 3D bridges that gap. This course introduces beginners to the Map 3D and AutoCAD Civil 3D environments, showing you how to import GIS data, work with georeferenced imagery, and execute basic drawing queries. You’ll also learn to link drawing objects to databases, create templates, and set up annotations, giving you the foundation to integrate mapping data into your design workflows efficiently and accurately.

Session 1: Getting to Know the Environment

  • What is AutoCAD Map 3D
  • AutoCAD Map 3D in AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Using the Workspaces
  • Understanding the User Interface
  • Importing GIS Data into CAD
  • Executing Drawing Queries
  • Inserting Georeferenced Imagery

Session 2: Linking Drawing Objects to Databases

  • Connecting to an Access Database using Data Connect
  • Creating linked Templates
  • Generating Data Links
  • Reviewing Links using Data View

Understanding georeferenced map data is just the beginning—integrating that information with design projects and external GIS databases is what brings your drawings to life. This course teaches AutoCAD Map 3D and Civil 3D users how to connect GIS files, configure data styles, label features, and create thematic maps. You’ll also learn to attach and manage object data, export to SHP files, and generate annotations from data attributes, giving your projects a real-world accuracy and professional edge.

Session 1: Making Maps from GIS Data

  • Connecting GIS files
  • Configuring Data Styles
  • Composing Feature Labels
  • Creating Thematic Maps
  • Defining Rules with Expression Editor
  • Exporting Maps to AutoCAD

Session 2: Expanding Data Associated with Drawing Objects

  • What is Object Data
  • Defining Object Data Tables
  • Attaching Object Data Tables
  • Export to SHP File
  • Creating Annotation using Object Data
