Architectural Design in AutoCAD

Architectural Design in AutoCAD is a two-level training series that teaches architects, designers, and CAD professionals how to develop professional, buildable drawings using only standard 2D AutoCAD tools. The series begins with planning and laying out architectural plans, creating elevations, managing layers, and producing scaled presentations. It then advances to constructing sections, wall assemblies, foundations, roof connections, and detailed callouts, all accurately scaled and annotated. By the end of the series, you’ll have the skills to produce complete architectural drawings and details efficiently, without relying on 3D modeling or BIM workflows.

This live online series offers 2 four-hour courses. You can take both courses or just the one that meets your needs. Each separate course is delivered in 2 two-hour sessions. A live instructor explains the detailed functions and addresses questions as the class progresses.

Note: Instructor will present using Autodesk AutoCAD 2026. Students who wish to follow along with instructor are encouraged to use the same version.

Recording: Registrants for a course will receive access to a recording of each session for 7 consecutive days. Access will start the next business day after the session ends.

While most AutoCAD courses focus on individual drafting tools, real-world architectural design requires knowing how to put it all together. This course teaches you how to develop architectural plans and elevations from scratch using only standard 2D CAD tools. You’ll learn space planning, plan layout techniques, and essential editing and annotation skills, as well as how to create elevations, blocks, and scaled presentations. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to produce professional, buildable architectural drawings using just basic AutoCAD tools.

Session 1: Plan Layouts

  • Space Planning and Area Layout
  • Using Offsets and Fillets
  • Trim, Extend, and Osnaps
  • Polylines and PEDIT Tools
  • Basic Layering and Annotation
  • Present Plans in Viewports to Scale

Session 2: Creating Elevations

  • Extending Elevations from Plan
  • Create Window and Door Blocks
  • Basic Hatching
  • Floor Levels, Datums and Dimensions
  • Present Elevations in Viewports to Scale

Most AutoCAD courses teach drafting tools, but the real skill is creating constructable sections and detailed drawings. This course focuses on advanced architectural construction detailing using only standard 2D CAD tools. You’ll learn to develop sections, wall assemblies, foundations, roof connections, and detailed callouts, all accurately scaled and annotated. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to produce professional, buildable details for any type of architectural project using just basic AutoCAD.

Session 1: Sections and Wall Sections

  • Extend Sections from Plans
  • Adding Wall Section Tags
  • Drawing Footings & Foundations
  • Drafting Wall Assemblies
  • Adding Sills/Jambs for Windows & Doors
  • Draw Roof Connections
  • Present Sections in Viewports to Scale

Session 2: Details Drafting

  • Detail Callouts on Plan/Section
  • Drafting Details to Scale
