Hydrology Design in Civil 3D With SSA

Many Civil 3D users still depend on outside hydrology tools like HEC-RAS or StormCAD, which can slow down workflows and make coordination more difficult. The Hydrology Design in Civil 3D with SSA course series shows you how to use Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA) to handle hydrology and drainage design directly within Civil 3D. Starting with pre- and post-development watershed modeling and detention pond design, then advancing into inlet and pipe network analysis, this series focuses on practical, real-world workflows. By the end of the courses, you’ll be able to build, analyze, and document hydrologic designs more efficiently - without constantly moving data between programs.

This live online series offers 2 four-hour courses. You can take both courses or just the one that meets your needs. Each separate course is delivered in 2 two-hour sessions. A live instructor explains the detailed functions and addresses questions as the class progresses.

Note: Instructor will present using Autodesk Civil 3D 2026. Students who wish to follow along with instructor are encouraged to use the same version.

Prerequisite: Students should have a working knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D.

Recording: Registrants for a course will receive access to a recording of each session for 7 consecutive days. Access will start the next business day after the session ends.

This course introduces Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA), Civil 3D’s built-in hydrology tool, to develop, edit, and manage pre- and post-development watersheds directly within your Civil 3D project. You’ll learn to create watersheds, generate TOC lines, import soils data, size and edit detention ponds, and generate reports - all within a streamlined Civil 3D workflow.

Session 1: Pre-Development Watersheds

  • Creating Pre-Dev Watersheds in Civil 3D
  • Generating TOC Lines
  • Importing Soils Information
  • Running SSA Stand-Alone
  • Building a Pre-Dev Detention Pond in SSA

Session 2: Post-Development Watershed

  • Creating Post-Dev Watersheds in Civil 3D
  • Building a Post-Dev Detention Pond in SSA
  • Sizing and Editing Detention Ponds in SSA
  • Working with Stage Storage Tables
  • Outlet Control Structures in SSA
  • Reports in SSA

Building on Level I, this course dives deeper into designing, sizing, and analyzing hydrologic systems using Civil 3D’s Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA). You’ll learn to create and manage pipe networks, export designs to SSA, perform detailed inlet and conveyance analysis, connect sub-basins and structures, handle bypass flow, and generate hydrology reports. By the end, you’ll be able to integrate verified hydrologic functionality into your Civil 3D projects for accurate, efficient, and fully documented designs.

Session 1: Inlet and Pipe Design in Civil 3D

  • Building Pipe Parts Lists in C3D
  • Setting up Migration Defaults
  • Drawing a Pipe Network in C3D
  • Exporting Pipe Networks to SSA

Session 2: Inlet and Pipe Design in SSA

  • Analysis and IDF Curve Settings
  • Structure and Conveyance Controls
  • Connecting Sub-Basins and Structures
  • Working with By-Pass Flow
  • Network Analysis and Sizing Process
  • Reports in SSA
  • Exporting Design to a File
  • Importing Designs and updating Civil 3D
