Basic Civil 3D Hydrology

Civil 3D includes powerful hydrology tools, but knowing where to start and how everything connects can be overwhelming. The Basic Civil 3D Hydrology course series introduces designers to Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA) and Civil 3D’s native drainage workflows in a clear, step-by-step way. Beginning with pre- and post-development watershed analysis and progressing into inlet, pipe, and gravity network design, these courses focus on building a solid foundation while improving efficiency and accuracy. By the end of the series, you’ll be able to confidently analyze basins, size networks, run reports, and update Civil 3D models without relying on external hydrology software.

This live online series offers 2 four-hour courses. You can take both courses or just the one that meets your needs. Each separate course is delivered in 2 two-hour sessions. A live instructor explains the detailed functions and addresses questions as the class progresses.

Note: Instructor will present using Autodesk Civil 3D 2026. Students who wish to follow along with instructor are encouraged to use the same version.

Prerequisite: Students should have a working knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D.

Recording: Registrants for a course will receive access to a recording of each session for 7 consecutive days. Access will start the next business day after the session ends.

Civil 3D includes built-in hydrology tools, but understanding which to use and how they integrate with pipe networks can be confusing. This course introduces the fundamentals of Storm & Sanitary Analysis (SSA) for pre- and post-development watersheds and basic inlet and pipe design. You’ll learn to set up Civil 3D for hydrology, configure outlet structures, analyze basins, build IDF curves, manage sub-basins and structures, handle bypass flows, run network analysis, and generate reports—all within the Civil 3D environment.

Session 1: Storm and Sanitary Analysis for Pre and Post Development

  • Setting up Autodesk Civil 3D for Hydrology
  • Analyzing the Pre-Dev Basin
  • Preparing the Post-Dev Basin
  • Configuring Outlet Control Structures for post development
  • Running Reports

Session 2: Storm and Sanitary Analysis for Inlet and Pipe Design

  • Using Civil 3D Structure Properties with SSA
  • Building IDF Curves
  • Setting Structure and Conveyance Controls
  • Connecting Sub-Basins and Structures
  • Working with By-Pass Flow
  • Running the Network Analysis
  • Creating Reports
  • Updating Civil 3D
