Anyone can draw a surface in Civil 3D. Few people build one that holds up. One where the grading is right, the volumes are defensible, and the drawings you stamp actually reflect the ground. The difference isn’t the software. It’s what you feed it, and how carefully you check it before you trust it.

Part 2: Surface Editing and Cleanup

Last time, we talked about building a surface the right way from the start. This time, we’re discussing how even a carefully built surface needs editing and knowing how to adjust a TIN for real world use is half the job.

A common edit you’ll make is pasting surfaces together. Maybe you’ve got an existing-conditions surface from survey and a design surface built from feature lines and grading objects that you need to combine for your overall site. Paste Surface (see below) lets you do that, but order matters; the last surface pasted takes priority in any area of overlap. Generally, you’ll select an Existing surface, then Paste your Proposed into it so that the new design overwrites the existing. If you’ve draped the proposed surface boundary so it uses the existing surface elevations, you should get a perfect alignment of contours on the combined surface. Always check a few known elevations after a paste operation to confirm the surface you expected to be on top is actually on top!

The next surface conditions you’ll want to address are Slivers, and they show up most often along breaklines that nearly, but not quite, share vertices. They’ll also show where two breaklines cross instead of meeting cleanly. The fix isn’t always simple or quick. You’ll need to zoom into the offending area, look at the actual triangle edges, and manually swap an edge or two to get a sensible triangulation. To do this, you’ll want to set your Surface display to a style that shows the triangulation lines before beginning any edits. Civil 3D’s “swap edge” tool lets you pick the shared edge between two adjacent triangles and flip it to the other diagonal. That changes the high point and “ridge”, or slope, between two adjoining triangles, which can eliminate Slivers and adjust weird humps in your contours as shown below:

Crossing breaklines deserve their own mention because they’re sneaky. Two breaklines crossing without a controlled vertex at the intersection will cause major surface problems. Breaklines that cross, missing each other by a fraction of a foot don’t throw errors, they just produce ugly slivers and inconsistent elevations that can be troublesome while contouring, or in a profile. Get in the habit of running a quick visual scan with edge display turned on (and triangle elevations labeled, if you need to dig in) any time you bring in a new batch of breaklines.

The last set of tools you’ll need to refine your Surface are the Add/Delete/Move points function (see below) These allow you to adjust specific elevation points within your Surface. They’re perfect for fine tuning what points contours should pass through, edge of pavement, or even building corner elevations to get you the refined Surface you need. The key point here is to realize that unlike spot elevations which go anywhere, Surface Points are the intersection points between triangles, so they’re going to adjust all the triangulation legs connecting to the point you are trying to edit.

I get that none of this is exciting work, and that’s sort of the point: a clean surface is invisible. Nobody notices a surface without Slivers or odd contouring, they only notice when it has them.
