Site Grading for Civil 3D

The Site Grading for Civil 3D course series is designed for civil and site designers who want to confidently create accurate, realistic grading models using Autodesk Civil 3D. Beginning with feature line grading and grading objects, the series establishes a clear, structured approach to site grading, including daylighting and detention basin design. It then advances into proposed surface development, breaklines, parcels, and surface merging to refine and detail grading for real-world projects. Through practical, project-focused instruction, you’ll gain the skills needed to produce professional site grading models that are dynamic, efficient, and easy to maintain.

This live online series offers 2 four-hour courses. You can take both courses or just the one that meets your needs. Each separate course is delivered in 2 two-hour sessions. A live instructor explains the detailed functions and addresses questions as the class progresses.

Note: Instructor will present using Autodesk Civil 3D 2026. Students who wish to follow along with instructor are encouraged to use the same version.

Prerequisite: Students should have a working knowledge of Autodesk Civil 3D.

Recording: Registrants for a course will receive access to a recording of each session for 7 consecutive days. Access will start the next business day after the session ends.

Grading a site accurately in Civil 3D can be challenging without a clear approach. This course teaches designers how to create realistic site grading using feature lines and grading objects. You’ll learn to build, edit, and manipulate feature lines, develop grading objects, and generate dynamic surfaces for practical, professional site designs—including detention basins and daylighted areas.

Session 1: Feature Line Grading

  • Creating Feature Lines from existing objects/surface elevations
  • Creating New Feature Lines
  • Creating/Extracting Feature Lines from Corridors
  • Adding Feature Lines to Surfaces
  • Editing Feature Line geometry
  • Editing Feature Line elevations
  • Working with Stepped Offsets

Session 2: Grading Objects

  • What are Grading Objects
  • Creating Simple Grading Objects
  • Dynamic Interaction of Grading Objects
  • Building Surfaces from Grading Objects
  • Creating Grading Objects from Feature Lines
  • Daylighting Using Grading Objects
  • Detention Basin Creation

Refining and detailing site grading is a critical skill for Civil 3D designers. This course goes beyond tool explanations to show how to apply grading techniques on real-world projects. You’ll learn to design proposed surfaces, work with breaklines and parcels, manipulate grading objects, and merge surfaces to create accurate, professional, and realistic site models.

Session 1: Proposed Surface Design

  • Understanding Surface Data Types
  • Working with Breaklines
  • Creating a Design Surface
  • Dynamic interaction of data sources and surfaces
  • Creating/Modifying Surface Display Styles
  • Creating/Modifying Surface Label Styles
  • Adding Contour Labels
  • Adding Surface Point Labels

Session 2: Additional Grading Tools

  • Understanding Parcels as Grading Tools
  • Creating Grading Objects from Parcels
  • Editing Parcel Elevations
  • Editing Parcel Geometry
  • Extracting Dynamic Feature Lines from Corridors
  • Manual Contouring of Surfaces
  • Merging Surfaces
